Chapter Four

Bridget stood at the entrance to the Hawthorn Hotel, fidgeting with her cranberry red skirts. She’d bypassed the Witch’s Ball for the first time in a decade, instead opting for the Hawthorne Hotel Halloween Gala the following night. The Seven Deadly Sins theme fit a little bit better with her state of mind these days. 

The thought of going to the Witch’s Ball and being surrounded by a room full of people dressed as the white rabbit or the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland made her want to close herself in her apartment above Broomstix and stay there till the season passed. Not this witch. Hells no. Not this year.

Limousines and expensive cars queued up at the entrance through the valet parking area. The red carpet to the entry door was packed with women in brightly colored gowns and glittering jewelry. Men in tuxedos held out their arms, and Bridget thought it was just the thing to get her out of the witchy politics of her everyday life.

When she’d stepped in front of the mirror after trying on the dress her best friend and fellow witch Isabel had chosen for her, she’d almost feigned a case of the flu. Except, she didn’t get sick and Isabel knew it.

“Put the dress on. And yes, the shoes too.”

Long and flowing, the dress was made for a woman with moderate assets on top, not the ones she was blessed with. They had long been a source of fascination for the various men in her life, and the undoubted reason for many of the shadowy curses carved into her body. And the heels… goddess but they were fuck me shoes and she’d be lucky if she got through the night without either breaking her ankle or falling on someone—or for them.

The shoes could be enchanted. It had happened before. Bridget knew Isabel just wanted to make sure she went out and actually had a good time, but the thought niggled. She shot her a glance.

“Did you?”

“Did I what?” 

“Spell the shoes.” 

“Would you stop that?” Her best friend frowned, grabbing at her hands. “You’re supposed to be Lust. Not anxiety.”

“What? Anxiety isn’t one of the seven deadlies.”

“Are you sure? Cause, I’m thinking it should be.” Isabel narrowed her eyes, witch fire glimmering in their depths.

“Okay… okay. But, if I find out you did…”

“Yeah, you’ll curse me. I know. How long have we known each other?” Isabel arched an elegant eyebrow in her direction.

True. 

“What did you say your costume was again?” Bridget eyed the gorgeous dress and sidled beneath the large green overhang, avoiding the spit of October rain that decided to make an appearance. 

“I didn’t,” Isabel smirked. “But, I’m Envy. Don’t you love it?”

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

Thanks for having me! I’ve been writing since I was a child, but it’s only within the last seven years that it has really taken off for me.

Tell us about your title featured in A Cursed All Hallows’ Eve.

Malediction is the second book in the Curseworkers Series. It centers around Bridget, a witch hung in Salem, who is given a second chance by a mysterious stranger. She meets a sexy wolf shifter at a Halloween party and together the two of them work to discover who is behind the murders happening in Salem.

How did you come up with the storyline?

I always wanted to write a book about Salem and well, it ended up being a series.

What inspires you to write?

Everyday life is choc full of inspiration and well…I love spinning worlds from my coffee cup.

My stammering annoyed him. He leaned over the bed, resting his fisted hands against my feet. I could feel his weight as he leaned onto the mattress.

“Tell me, woman! I must know!”

I whimpered and struggled away from him, trying to meld myself into the headboard. I glanced over his shoulder, judging the distance between myself and the door, wondering if I was fast enough to run by him. Wondering if I was brave enough to try.

“Ah,” the specter said, for I knew he was no mere man. He was a ghost, a demon, a creature not of this world, for whom on this plane of existence could pass through solid objects.

“I see I’ve startled you.” He stood and raised outstretched hands before him as if he placated a frightened animal. “I will not harm you. I cannot. I have no mortal flesh. I cannot touch you. 

Observe…”

He reached toward me, placing his icy fingers on the hand holding the candlestick. I say icy fingers because I felt the press of them firmly against my skin, a solid enough touch for a specter.

He gasped.

I looked to his face and if I were not so full of fright, I might have found amusement to witness the color drain from his face. Did ghosts grow pale as humans when in a state of bewilderment?

He stumbled back, staring at his hand.

“What sorcery is this?” He whispered. “What did you do this night?”

“I… I…” I licked my suddenly dry lips so I could speak. “I attempted to summon the spirit of Sir Nicholas Weatherby.” I might as well be truthful while speaking with a ghost. After all, how could he condemn me when he, himself, was dead?

“Sir Nicholas Weatherby?” he repeated, his eyes wide. “I am Nicholas Weatherby.”

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

I've been writing for about twenty-five years since I was 15 years old, but I've only been a published author for the last ten years. I began writing for fun. I was a kid looking to entertain myself. My brother and I used to create our own newspaper and forced our family members to subscribe. We'd include outlandish articles which now kind of reminds me of The Onion! As a kid, I also wrote a series of short stories about my brother's pet turtle called, The Adventures of Gonzo the Turtle. That turtle was quite a hero, saving the forest and the lives of the other animals.   

Tell us about your title featured in: A Cursed All Hallows’ Eve

I've been a fan of gothic romance since I was a kid watching Dark Shadows re-runs with my mom. It was one of her favorite shows and has influenced a lot of my writing. In my twenties, I discovered Jane Erye, Rebecca and a long list of Victoria Holt novels. The Ghost of Morley Manor is a gothic romance featuring a penniless heroine who is desperate to find a way to keep her home and her brother safe. She resorts to summoning a ghost who might tell her the location of the hidden jewels that are rumored to be stashed somewhere in her home.

How did you come up with the storyline?

The story started from a writing prompt challenge several years ago about setting a story in a graveyard. My scene began with the heroine and her brother traipsing into the graveyard to conduct a seance and the story grew after that. 

What inspires you to write?

I have an inner drive to tell stories. I can't explain it. It's part of my DNA, I think! But, my children inspire me to publish those stories. I want to teach them to pursue their dreams and what better way to do that than by pursuing my own?

Tell us about your other books:

All of my books are in the romance genre. I require a happily-ever-after with the books I both read and write. Heat levels vary from sweet to steamy and I've written short stories, novellas and novels. The romances I write are primarily paranormal, but also I write romances that are historical, gothic, fantasy, and sci-fi.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

Thank you so much for having me! I began publishing in 2014, but I have always wanted to be a writer. I went to school for English Lit and Creative Writing, but I have been a doodler and dabbler for years. Raising my children was very important to me so I waited until the youngest was school aged before setting about to get published. This is basically my dream come true. 

Tell us about your title featured in: A Cursed All Hallows’ Eve

Hers to Bear is the second in my Barvale Holiday Tales. The Barvale Clan is made up mainly of Black Bear Shifters in the fictional South Jersey town of Barvale, which literally means Bear Valley. Maisy left her hometown after being bullied in high school for claiming to see a boy turn into a bear, only to return years later to help her dad with their farm and wouldn’t you know it, that same boy still lives there! Halloween is a time for all sorts of magic, wouldn’t you say? Maybe even the kind that brings fated mates together.

How did you come up with the storyline?

This is a spinoff series of my Bear Claw Tales and Barvale Clan Tales which feature the Bear Shifters of Barvale and their mates. I wrote a Christmas short over the summer and knew immediately when I saw this anthology that I would write another one of these holiday shorts for this set. My story is lighthearted, romantic, and most of all, fun.

What inspires you to write?

Inspiration comes from so many sources for me. I find it in my husband, my children, a song, the tiny little day to day nothings that a million people go through but for some reason get stuck in my head. Hopefully I don’t foul it up too much when I put ink to my ideas.  

Tell us about your other books:

I started out writing Young Adult Urban Fantasy which then developed into Paranormal Romance. Now with over fifty titles published, I have to say I can’t even imagine a time when I won’t be writing. Most of my books are set in the same paranormal world and mainly take place in my home state of New Jersey. I call it the Grazi Kelly Universe in honor of my first heroine, Maria Graziana Kelly aka Grazi (grah-tzee). Characters and creatures overlap, but each series can be read alone.

Sometimes, I get to play in other authors' worlds and each experience has been unique and has enabled me to write a broader cast of characters and scenarios. My thanks to those wonderful authors who opened the doors and let me in! You can find me in MT Worlds and Evel Worlds.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

I haven’t been a writer very long. I started on fan fiction in 2018 and when 2020 took a turn for the worst I decided to create my own worlds through writing.

How did you come up with the storyline? 

As cliché as it sounds, it came to me in a dream… just bits and pieces of course but it was enough to create a mini outline and go from there.

I’m currently have a phoenix shifter book out now and she meets a shifter hunter, its amazing, if I do say so myself ;) I am working on a gentlemans club/ BDSM shifter series that I’m super excited about.
